Welcome to Rainelle, WV
Welcome to Rainelle, WV!
Nestled in Sewell Valley and predating the town, Rainelle has a rich history dating back to the 1750s when Stephen Sewell settled in the area. Originally named Raine in honor of the Raine family, the town was established in 1909 after being turned down by the Post Office Department under that name. Thomas W. Raine and his brother John moved to the location from Pennsylvania in 1906 to harvest a large stand of hardwoods, leading to the establishment of the Meadow River Lumber Company, which operated for 60 years, becoming the largest hardwood sawmill in the world.
With a strong foundation built on industry and community, Rainelle has continued to grow and evolve, offering a welcoming and vibrant environment for residents and visitors alike. Come and experience the rich history and resilience of our town in the heart of Sewell Valley.
